Denture Care

 

 

 

 

 

False teeth need regular cleaning to look after the denture, your mouth and any remaining teeth. Poor denture care may lead to:-

• plaque build up causing decay in other teeth

• bad breath

• staining of the denture

• Candidal infection; "oral thrush"

It is still important to visit your dentist regularly, although normally with longer between visits, even if you have no teeth. Your dentist will keep an eye on your dentures as well as ensure that the soft tissues of your mouth are in good health

 

Dentures can normally be cleaned sufficiently with normal toothpaste and a toothbrush. If additional cleaning is required then dentures can be soaked for about 15 minutes in proprietary denture cleaners, or diluted Milton before brushing. Dentures should only be soaked for 15 minutes, not overnight, as these products will affect the denture structure with prolonged use. Dentures should not be worn over night.

• brush the denture morning and night

• soak for 15 minutes if required

• leave the denture out at night

 

Denture fixatives.

Fixatives act like a glue to help hold a denture in place. Normally a well constructed denture will not require fixatives, although there are a minority of patients who never find their dentures retentive enough without. If needed, three small blobs of fixative can be placed under the upper denture to aid retention. Fixatives are of little help with a lower denture.

It is worth allowing your dentist to check the fit of your dentures before deciding to use fixative as there may be a better alternative to improve the fit of your denture.
